I feel like the $16 was well worth it even just in the first hour I've played it. The game launched today and is on sale for 20% of for the next week. I'm sure much of my initial struggle was just basic unfamiliarity with the game, but it definitely doesn't seem to be a cakewalk like vanilla XCOM. If you are looking for challenge, it certainly seems to be there if you crank the difficulty up. The environment and music are pleasing and the game was easy to pick up as a veteran xcom player. For whatever reason I connect with the story, maybe it's because I sorta live in the Wild West so this stuff is constantly on my mind, or maybe it's something else but the game feels very immersive to me. I went from excited to frustrated to excited to depressed to jubilant to terrified to excited to ECSTATIC in just the first 30 minutes and just when I finally beat the tutorial my excitement immediately turned to dread as the story unfolded.
Well, I'm a veteran Long War player having beaten Impossible half a dozen times now and I lost my HARD WEST campaign about dozen times in just the first tutorial-esque mission (max difficulty settings)! Here is my first hour in HARD WEST, edited down to a short and sweet 15 minute introduction. HARD WEST released this morning, billed as XCOM in the Wild West! I'm sure a lot of you are wondering is it worth your money? Will it be too easy after playing Long War? Is it a viable candidate to tide you over until XCOM 2?
